West is More explores a series of instances of surpluses and deficits reflected within [American] culture in relation to the world. It is also a glance at present dichotomies and parallels of “East” and “West,” and a contemplation of spatial relations. Playing with the perception of the West as having an advantage over other zones, West is More asks: Is West a concept or a geographic location? Could the West be ‘more’ of a good thing or its opposite? This exhibition allows individuals to decide where the West lies on a value scale. Participating artists in the exhibition, are emerging and established artists from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, and Mexico City whose work portrays where the West stands historically, politically, culturally, or geographically. The West is explored as place: physical, psychological, and political. To the artists of West is More, West might stand for a continent, a country, a city, or simply a state of mind. From their own space in time, they are able to reflect upon this concept, mediating ideas which fall anywhere between a splendorous utopia and an iniquitous hell.

About the curator:

Veronica Duarte is a Mexican-born interdisciplinary visual artist. She holds an MFA from the University of California at Berkeley, and has exhibited her work in the United States and Mexico. She currently lives in Los Angeles, CA.
