West Los Angeles College Art Gallery proudly presents “Le Mer De Glace : 2012 Overture” featuring Dominique Kippelen, Glenn Bach and Lothar Schmitz.

Drawing visual notations interpreted from the 19th century Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich’s work, “La Mer De Glace” (aka”The North Pole Expedition Disaster”), visiting artist from Strasbourg, France, Dominique Kippelen,  deconstructs the geometrics of Friedrich’s work into parsed appendages of soft sculptures and wooden maquettes left in the wake of an emptied dogma; kenosis to nature as if.

As a counterpoint to Kippelen’s ephemeral inflections, artist and physicist, Lothar Schmitz’s “manufactured ecologies” accentuate the far reaches of speculated contemporary human-nature negotiations.

Glenn Bach’s processing of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture as a double century old skeletal composition, aptly titled, “2012 Overture” will premiere amongst the resident morphemes in its effort to rise above the intermittent tide.
This exhibit was made possible with the invaluable assistance of
Denise Nugent, Saba Salekfard and Behn Samareh

SPLAY is the third edition of XQZT, a non-structural performance series presented by Kio Griffith currently at Sabina Lee Gallery on Chung King Road / Chinatown. Each performance is an improvised collaboration between a musician and a dancer with no rehearsals and in some situations a first time meeting in the spirit of ichigo-ichie, (literally “one time, one meeting”), the japanese term that describes a cultural concept of transience, and the contemplation of a singular and decisive event.

MONEY MARK

Money Mark is a musician, composer and producer who is most noted for his collaborations with the Beastie Boys. His first album, the critically applauded “Mark’s Keyboard Repair” (1995), was made up of keyboard driven pop‐funk songs recorded at demo quality. It was followed up by his second full‐length, “Push the Button” in 1998. “Push the Button” eclectic and forward thinking, combines aspects of Rock and Pop with Soul, Funk and Hip‐Hop. It contains seminal tracks such as “Hand In Your Head” and the eponymous “Push the Button”, which catapulted Mark to the top of the British Pop Charts, and cemented his status as a prominent and cutting edge solo artist in the US.

His 2001 follow up “Change is Coming” was critically acclaimed; a top 10 record for critics and collectors alike. His most notable contribution to popular music thus far might be the famous keyboard phrase that opens and underpins “Where It’s At” from Beck’s 1996 album, Odelay. In September 2006 Money Mark signed to Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records label. Brand New By Tomorrow, his first album in 6 years, was released in February 2007 to the critical acclaim that accompanies all of Mark’s solo endeavors.

Most recently, Mark composed the score to the feature documentary Beautiful Losers. He continues to produce, remix, compose for film, TV, and video games, collaborate and co‐write with artists as diverse as Yoko Ono and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and to tour as a solo artist.

ROXANNE STEINBERG

Roxanne Steinberg, dancer/choreographer, has danced with composers and musicians Yas Kaz, Paul Chavez, Kenta Nagai, Tatsuya Nakatani, Leon Mobley, Myra Melford, Nels Cline & Alex Cline and dancers Min Tanaka and Amagatsu of Sankai Juku. A founder of Body Weather Laboratory in L.A. (1987), she teaches and performs with dancer Oguri. She has been presented by Dance Conversations at the Flea since 2005 and in Flower of the Season, a dance series she now co-directs. She choreographed for Body Vox in Portland and for artist Lauren Bon’s projects Not a Cornfield, Farmlab and Strawberry Flag. Working at Bon’s Metabolic Studio in Los Angeles, dance is her language to coordinate space and community.
