KATE OLSON

Kate Olson is an improvising saxophonist and woodwind teacher based in Seattle, WA. Since moving to Seattle in 2010, she has done her best to infiltrate the local, regional and international improvised music scenes. She can be heard performing with her own projects The Syrinx Effect and Sugarpants, and as a collaborator with the Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra, Ask the Ages, Daniel Barry’s 2 Hemispheres and multiple other small ensembles. She is a regular member of Wayne Horvitz’s Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble (RRCME) and has appeared multiple times with the acoustic incarnation of Zony Mash: Sweeter Than the Day. During her school days, Kate participated in clinics and masterclasses with such jazz greats as Wynton Marsalis and Stefon Harris. She has a BA in Music (Jazz Emphasis) from the University of Wyoming and an MM in Improvisation from the University of Michigan, where she studied with Geri Allen, Don Walden, Andrew Bishop, and Ed Sarath. Kate’s international resume also continues to grow, including performances in Russia, Latvia, Turkey, Switzerland and Slovakia. She has appeared on stage with improvised music luminaries such as Pauline Oliveros, Steve Coleman, Karl Berger, Bobby Previte, and others.

In 2011, Kate was nominated for the Earshot Golden Ear Award in the Emerging Artist category. She has appeared on both Earshot’s Jazz: The Second Century Festival and Earshot’s Jazz Festival, totaling 6 performances for the organization over the past year and a half. Kate has recorded for three Sonarchy podcasts, including the U-District’s successful free improvisation meet up, the Racer Sessions, her own project the KGT trio (recording their first album in DC this year), and with electronic experimentalists Lou-Lou Hernandez. Kate’s musical goals include expanding the educated audience base for improvised music and creating performance situations that facilitate opportunities for improvisers to network and advance their careers in the field.

KATE OLSON QUARTET / ACC TRIO

The ACC Trio is an improvising trio consisting of Michael Alvidrez, acoustic bass; Brian Christopherson, percussion; and Dan Clucas, cornet and trumpet. Originally conceived as a truncated version of Clucas’s quartet (which includes clarinetist Brian Walsh), the group functions as both self-contained unit and “pickup band” for improvising musicians passing through Los Angeles. Conversant in the languages of both improvisation and composition, with a big nod toward the DIY spirit of punk rock, the members of ACC have collectively performed with a long list of L.A. artists such as Nels Cline, Alex Cline, Saccharine Trust, Joe Baiza’s Mecolodiacs, The Atomic Sherpas, Vinny Golia, Michael Vlatkovich, Steuart Liebig, and many others.
For this performance the ACC Trio proudly welcomes Kate Olson to L.A. and will function as 3/4 of the Kate Olson Quartet.
