Saxophonist, composer Rent Romus created the Lords of Outland in 1994 a collective of like-minded musicians focusing on exploring improvisation, melody, noise, and sound art while acknowledging their jazz, rock, and blues roots. The group has developed original music ranging in a series of recordings inspired by abstract socio-political themes as well as authors Frank Herbert, H.P. Lovecraft, Phil K. Dick.
Rent Romus is an American saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, music and performing arts producer, and community leader living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is heavily involved in exploring outside the confines of standard music forms of composition and improvisations in a wide variety of musical settings. He is also focused in presenting and supporting the local experimental and avant-garde community.
From his very beginnings as a student of Jazz while being exposed to the twilight tutelage of Stan Getz he found himself drawn to the outer realms of music. As a producer and artist business activist he runs Edgetone Records a label for all forms of improvisation and experimentation. He is the founder and Executive Director of Outsound Presents under which curates The SIMM Music Series at the Musicians Union Hall on alternate Sundays as well as the long standing Luggage Store Gallery New Music Series every Thursday both in San Francisco, and The Outsound New Music Summit, a national experimental music festival held in the greater San Francisco Bay Area every summer in July.
CJ Borosque is a well known bay area based improviser and noise and modern (and video) artist. Her art is a blending of genres pulling from abstract and avant-garde traditions. She is considered locally and internationally as a noiscian, and a visual artist whose home is in the underground music of San Francisco.
CJ Borosque plays tumpet and analog FX boxes configured in a “no-input” design which allows for the creation of sonic feedback and feedback sounds without the use of a typical sound source… her noise projects are currently created using the electrical signal that is within her gear.
Ray Schaeffer currently performs on fretless 6 string , fretted 4 and 8 string basses using a host of electronic effects that are incorporated to be part of the instrument. After studying music theory and upright bass in high school and junior college, Ray has performed in a diverse array of ensembles from full orchestra to folk rock bands, and experimental improv groups going back to the 70s.
Armed with an array of teachings, Phillip became the leader of various groups over the years. In 1967 he began his first group Ice, a psychedelic R & B group performing music in the style of Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix & Obscure Soul & Blues & funk jazz. The band toured the Midwest in an old black city bus, opened for bands like Canned Heat, and Sweetwater utill the group members went their separate ways in 1972. Many of the members went on to play w/Peter Frampton, Tommy Bolin, Cannonball Adderly, Luther Tucker, Members of the Eagles and other lesser known artists in the one minute of fame category.
Undaunted by the end of his first group Phillip pushed ahead and created Arrival in 1974. This group was significantly different then his early psychedelic R & B days. This progressive rock band featured the electronics of David Toby & bassist Ray Schaeffer.
In 1985 he formed Sound Oasis, a six piece jazz group theat performed at the Vintage Inn in West Oakland for a number of years. His current projects include Tri-Cornered Tent Show, an improvisation group that explores music inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, various group concepts with saxophonist Rent Romus including the Abstractions, and writing experimental country music for his project “White Buffalo, Midwestern Gothic”.
