STEPHANIE LAK

Stephanie Lak resides in San Francisco, Ca. and is originally from Massachusetts. Her current performances are centered around sound collage, field recordings, restless electronics, tapes, objects, voice and video. She is a repeat collaborator, improvisational performer and multi-instramentalist who is an active multidisciplinary visual artist. As an artist, Stephanie is influenced by the natural world, a digital one and through video, paintings, sketchings and photos she captures, creates and designs interactions between the two.

ANDREA PENSADO

Andrea Pensado works with sound as a performer, programer and teacher. She has been using digital media and live interactive musical systems since 1995. She studied in Argentina and Poland. At first, she composed mainly for acoustic instruments. However, she felt gradually more attracted by different sound realms. Today, the abrasive digital noise of her improvisations is far away from her earlier pieces. Harsh dense layers of sounds, often interwoven with her voice, combine hybrid synthesis techniques to create a highly personal sound language, which reflects an intuitive, emotional and paradoxically also logical approach to music making. She currently lives in the US.

………………………………….

At this crucial time in history, as perhaps all times are, the climate of uncertainty grows hotter and hotter. Distrust in governments has led to increased partisanship and in some cases, civil unrest and even revolution. In the USA we are seeing artists increasingly turn to political themes. Sometimes these manifest themselves in oblique ways and at other times are directly engaged but all of the artists in this exhibition propose new ways of considering the Political and their relationship to these issues – of civil liberties and rights, of opposition to authority, of concerns over the future and to notions of freedom.

These artists can be seen as aligned with popular movements such as Occupy, Anonymous and Wikileaks, providing an alternative discourse for society while recognizing self-reflexively that they are marginalized somewhat – as the status and positioning of artists, within privileged spaces and audiences, can be problematic in relation to activism but still heralds the hope that these artists hold in the act of making art and its possibility for change.

The problematic aspects of the relationship of freedom to monetary power are also explored via a meta-dialogue exposed by the pragmatic limitations to the ability of the artists involved to transport their works to another audience. These financial boundaries themselves speak to the dynamic between the ability to have ones voice heard and the constrictions to expression, the right to assembly and association, caused by money and thus Power.

about Hong Kong Contemporary 13

With the success of its hot debut in 2012, Hong Kong Contemporary will once again provide an interacting platform for art lovers around the world in 2013.

In recent years, Hong Kong art market has developed and risen dramatically, seizing the attention from global art communities. Many worldly renowned art fairs and auction houses, such as Christie’s and Art Basel, start to settle down in this newly emerging city of art. Through various shows and fairs during Hong Kong Art Week, both international and local art business communities can gain a chance to interchange cross-cultural experiences of art in this gateway where east meets west.

Art sellers and buyers, collectors, critic, gallerists, museum curators and anyone who is involved in art business can certainly enjoy the decent art sales and a serendipitous discovery on good artworks in Hong Kong Contemporary. We promise to feature the highest quality of artworks in the coming art fair, spotlighting latest development of contemporary drawings, paintings, installations, and much more.

Hong Kong Contemporary is of a new generation of International Art Fairs. Our first and foremost purpose is to provide a fresh, trendy and accessible modern art. We are confident that we will have a very strong and dynamic international art fair, and Hong Kong Contemporary would make another contribution in the art world.
